I taught the same to my street puppy without any food.. just with a snap and point his hand with my finger and picking his hand myself to shake . Now whenever I snap and open my hand after that, he shake 🤷🏻

Never thought about doing it that way, but we’ve had good luck anyway.
I always took Pomeranians to be idiots, but we wound up rescuing one from being put to sleep, and she might be the smartest most adaptable dog I’ve ever had among a lab, a pit, and an AusShep.
She “shakes” with right paw, “paws” with her left, speaks on command, stands up on her hind legs, spins in place, and rolls over, not to mention obedience commands like come, sit, and stay. Only took us a few months, and she’s even an older dog. Kind of blows my mind.
He’s so happy, oh my goodness. He’s like, “Here’s the other one.”
